WALLY

Me llamo Wally y soy inglés. Mi papá se llama Martin Handford, es ilustrador y me ha dibujado para viajar por todo el mundo y perderme para que tú me encuentres. Me gusta la fotografía, llevar flequillo, caminar por sitios abarrotados de gente y tomar té. Siempre salgo con un bastón que no necesito y, por eso, lo pierdo a la primera de cambio.

En mis siete libros, he viajado por todo el mundo e, incluso, a través del tiempo. Siempre encuentro cosas fascinantes allá donde voy. Y también suelo tener frío...aunque vaya a la playa. Así que si véis un pompón rojo, probablemente debajo esté yo.

¿Cómo prefiere que le llamemos? ¿Wally, Waldo, Charlie? Tiene muchos nombres.

Sí. En Francia me llaman Charlie, en Turquía soy Ali y en Estados Unidos Waldo... Pero, bueno, me podéis tutear y llamarme Excelentísimo Señor Don Wally, por ejemplo.

¿Qué tal se vive entre las páginas de un libro?

Apretadito. Por eso no engordo. Además cuando se cierran las páginas, siempre se monta alguna fiesta temática. De todas formas, es una vida difícil porque no hay un día de descanso: da lo mismo un lunes que un domingo, los libros nunca cierran por vacaciones.

¿Por qué en sus libros parece que nadie tiene casa?

Me alegro de que me hagáis esta pregunta. Es cierto. Todas las páginas parecen Calcuta o Manhattan en hora punta. Yo salgo por la mañana tempranito a por el periódico y siempre hay gente por todas partes, y  pienso: ¿pero es que esta gente no tiene casa? No puedes ni tirar una foto del paisaje, que siempre sale algún cabezón por el medio...

¿Qué opina de eso que dice la gente de que Wenda y tú sois la pareja que menos gasta en ropa del mundo?

Eso son habladurías. Nos gusta la ropita cómoda y somos gente práctica. Además ¿tú te crees que si nos vistiéramos de gris nos encontraríais? Lo hacemos pensando en los demás, bueno, y también porque la madre de Wenda tiene una tienda y nos hace un 2x1 en cosas con rayas. 

¿Hace cuánto que no se hace una revisión o cambio de gafas? 

¡Buuuf! Creo que desde el 87... Es que hay tanta gente en los libros que nunca encuentro una óptica.

¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de llevar gafas? ¿Y lo que menos?
 Lo mejor es que si alguien te estornuda a la cara, y en mi libro pasa mucho, tienes los ojos protegidos. En cambio, es un rollo cuando quieres ponerte las gafas de buceo. Por favor, que alguien le diga a Martin que me dibuje unas gafas de buceo graduadas, ¡que ya hace la porra de años que existen!

¿Por qué cree que hay tan pocos personajes famosos con gafas?

Ya me lo decía el otro día Clark Kent. Desde que se inventaron las lentillas, todo el mundo te dice: quítate las gafas, si estás más guapo. Pero a mí me gusta llevar gafas porque me hacen más alto. Hace unos días, me encontré en la farmacia a Batman, que se estaba probando unas bifocales, y se puso todo colorado en cuanto me vio. Hay que ver con lo presumido que es y luego se pone esas mallas tan ridículas.

My name's Wally and I'm Brittish. My dad's Martin Handford, he's an illustrator and he has created me to travel around the world and lose myself so you can find me. I like photography,  wearing fringe, walking through crowded places and having tea. I always go out with a cane, which I don't need, that is why I always lose it at the slightest chance.

In my seven books, I've travelled around the world and even through time. I always find fascinating things wherever I go. And I'm usally cold...even when I'm at the beach. So if you see a red pompom, I'll probably be just below it.

How do you prefer to be called? Wally, Waldo, Charlie? You've got many names.

Yes. In France, they call me Charlie. In Turkey, Ali. And in the United States, I'm Waldo...But, well, you can be on familiar terms with me and call me His Worship Mr. Wally, for example.

How is living in a book?

Cramped. That's why I'm so thin. Besides, when the book is closed there are always some theme parties. Anyway, it's a hard life because there are no days off. No matter if it is Monday or Saturday, books never go on holidays.

In your books, why people seem to have no home?

I'm glad you asked me that. It's true. Every page seems to be Kolkata or Manhattan during rush hour. I go out early in the morning to get my newspaper and there are always lots of people everywhere. And I think to myself: don't they have a home? You can't even take a picture of the landscape, there is always a head in the middle...

What's your opinion on what people say about you and Wenda as the smallest spender couple ever, referring to clothing?

Only piece of gossip. We like comfortable clothing, we're pratical people. Besides, do you really think that if we wear grey clothes you would find us? We dress like that because we devote ourselves to others. And, well, also because Wenda's mother owns a shop and she gives us 2 for 1 in all striped clothes.

How long has it been since your last check-up at the ophthalmologist?

Phew!...I think since 1987. There are so many people in my books that I can never get to an optitian's.

What do you like best about wearing glasses? And what do you like least?

The best: when someone sneezes in your face, which happens a lot in my books, your eyes are protected. On the other hand, it's an awful bore when you want to wear a diving mask. Can anybody please tell Martin to draw me with a mask with prescription lenses. They have been invented ages ago!

Why do you think there are so few famous charactes with glasses?

Clark Kent told me so, the other day. Since contact lenses were invented, everybody says: take off your glasses, you look better! But I like wearing glasses, they make me look taller. Some days ago I came across Batman at the chemist's and he was trying on a pair of bifocals and he went red when he saw me! He's so primp and he goes around with those ridiculous tights!
